Choice Brits 2003

Every winter, filmmakers across the globe hold their breath and hope for success at the coveted British Academy Awards (BAFTAs). This year, UK filmmaker's organisation The Script Factory was determined to give the many Brits in competion a real chance by highlighting some of the homegrown talent eligible for nomination, especially because of the new ruling on viewing tapes makes it harder to see some of the smaller title!

Though many of Brit films subsequently received nominations for the awards, in the end, it was really Lord of the Rings, Lost and Translation and Master and Commander who shared many of the awards between them. To see the full list of nominations and awards, go to www.bafta.org.

Choice Brits screening series was co-presented by Variety, in association with Orange and the UK Film Council, and it was designed to profile the Brit films in contention for British Academy Awards this winter.

From mid-December, the Academy began to vote across 16 categories - ranging from Best Film to best performance and craft categories. With over 70 British films eligible for votes this year, the Choice Brits screening series was only able to celebrate 12 of the potential titles, with each screening introduced by a film industry luminary ranging from Anthony Minghella to Danny Boyle - each of whom remind its audience exactly why we should be proud of the Brit talent on display. It's been great to preview and re-screen some of the brightest Brit films from the current year in this series...and looking back, we think it will be remembered as quite a good year for quality British films!

The Script Factory

The UK's premier screenwriters' organisation, The Script Factory works to fill the gap between screenwriters and the film industry by producing performed readings of new screenplays; by offering a range of training programmes to suit writers and people who work with writers; and by staging a huge live events programme throughout the year across the UK and internationally, which places filmmakers centre-stage to inspire, encourage and entertain.

Choice Brits

There is a colossal amount of talent in this country with regard to directors, actors, writers, producers, and the technical infrastructure is fantastic - as good as anywhere in the world
