And the winner is...
Well, it all started well for the Brits with awards going to Touching the Void, In this World, and the divine Bill Nighy, but despite a number of major norminations for Brits this year, in the end Lord of the Rings, Lost in Translation and Master and Commander split many of the spoils.
Anthony Minghella's beautiful Cold Mountain also took a few awards, but many people agreed that it was bizarrely overlooked and Harvey Weinstein suggested that, with hindsight, its release date did it no favours with the British Academy voters.
Now that the awards are over, we can look back on the films that were made in the UK this year - and the British talent on show from films outside of the UK - and perhaps reflect that it seems to have been quite a vintage year. Cold Mountain, Girl With a Pearl Earring, Touching the Void, Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself, Love Actually, In this World, Heart of Me, The Mother, Young Adam, Revengers Tragedy, 16 Years of Alcohol, In America - it's a list of astounding diversity with something for almost every cinemagoer, and a list that represents a pool of immense talent which certainly bodes well for the future!
